Near the end of 2014 I completed these two paintings.
I think of them as sister paintings. The Contemplation of Saturn and The Contemplation of Saturn II speak of Saturn, ancient Roman God of time (amongst other things). The steady gaze of a young woman meets the viewer, her outstretched palm holding a collection of human teeth- the calcified structures that remain of us once we are gone. In contrast to the permanence of teeth, the plume of vapour that wafts upwards is fleeting.
